There’s Brie, and then there’s this Petit Brie from world-renowned fifth-generation affineur Rodolphe Le Meunier, named both the best cheesemonger in France as well as the best in the entire world. Brie has a reputation for being somewhat pedestrian, but after one taste of this incredible cheese you’ll realize that when it’s in the right hands, it can be downright life-changing.
Le Meunier’s Brie starts with fresh milk from a herd of 150 Holstein cows that graze in the fields of the Rambouillet, a forested county west of Paris, and it’s made on-site at farmhouse creamery La Tremblaye – the only creamery that imports farmhouse brie to the US. In the hands of Le Meunier, it’s carefully aged to allow the paste to become rich, gooey, and velvety; and the flavor to become grassy, buttery, and mushroomy, with notes of fresh cream and terroir. It’s best enjoyed on its own on a crusty baguette, in order to allow yourself to recalibrate exactly what good French Brie should taste like.
