Ploughgate Creamery’s unsalted cultured butter is made in the old European tradition using fresh Vermont cream and a slow fermentation process that brings out its sweet, gently tangy flavor. The cream is cultured for 24 hours before being hand-churned and kneaded, resulting in an unbelievably creamy, silky texture with exceptional depth of flavor. Because it’s unsalted, this butter is perfect for both sweet and savory applications—think flaky pastries, roasted vegetables, fresh bread, or rich sauces. Its pure, clean taste makes it a favorite among chefs and home bakers alike.
Ploughgate Creamery was founded in 2014 by Marisa Mauro, a Vermont native who developed a passion for dairy production at just 15 years old. After years of working with cheesemakers in Vermont and California, Mauro turned her attention to handcrafted cultured butter—a rarity at the time. She launched Ploughgate on the historic Bragg Farm in Vermont’s Mad River Valley, reviving traditional butter-making techniques and helping bring cultured butter into the American artisan dairy spotlight. In 2022, to support growing demand, Mauro partnered with Maplebrook Farm, another Vermont dairy producer, to scale production while preserving the craft that made Ploughgate beloved.
