Haechandle Gochujang is a spicy Korean condiment made with powdered chili pepper and fermented soybeans. Wheat flour and other ingredients combine to give it its pasty texture. In its container and on the plate, Gochujang looks a bit like ketchup, both in color and texture. It is a pantry essential in Korea, as it is a key condiment that is served alongside many important Korean dishes, most notably bulgogi and bibimbap.

Gochujang is thick and sticky because it is very concentrated. This dense texture carries a well balanced pungency. It is very versatile, as Gochujang can be used stirred into dipping sauces or used to spice up Asian soups. It is often thinned out with water or vinegar when used as a marinade.
